After my recent blog post on perimenopause (see here), I had several questions from you about fascia. The kind of tightness I’m talking about here isn’t just from sport or physical strain. Fascia is hugely affected by emotional and mental stress. Not just what you might be feeling now, but the load you’ve carried through your whole life. This is true for both men and women, and it’s one of the reasons fascia work can feel so unexpectedly profound, lightening and releasing.
The Underappreciated Hero of Your Body
Fascia doesn’t get much attention. It’s not as obvious as bones or as glamorous as muscles, but it quietly holds everything in your body together. Think of it as a continuous, three-dimensional web of connective tissue that wraps, weaves, and links every muscle, organ, blood vessel, nerve, and bone. It’s literally the fabric of your life, and if it’s unhappy, you’ll know about it.
Tight or restricted fascia can contribute to fatigue, muscle aches, joint stiffness, pain (including seemingly random things like toothache), headaches, and that feeling of being disconnected from your body.
Why Fascia Responds to Stress
Here’s what’s fascinating: fascia responds to stress, both physical and emotional. Tension from injury, yes, but also from past emotional upsets, ongoing anxiety, or that constant low-level stress of modern life. This tension can cause fascia to tighten and stick, leading to pain, stiffness, or that “held together too tightly” feeling many of us know so well.
Changes in hormones can also affect fascia’s flexibility, which is why during stressful periods you may notice more aches, joint stiffness, or changes in your posture. Your body is literally holding the story of your stress.
The Myth About “Breaking Up” Fascia
One of the biggest myths is that fascia needs to be poked, pummelled, or aggressively “released” to work properly. In reality, fascia does not like to be forced. Harsh massage or painful treatments often cause it to tense and tighten even more. That’s because fascia is alive with nerve endings – it’s part of your sensory system, and when it feels under threat, it pulls back to protect you.
Instead, fascia responds best to slow, sustained, gentle movements. When you work with it patiently, it can reorganise and soften, helping you feel more open and free in your movement.
The Nervous System Connection
Fascia is deeply connected to your nervous system. Chronic tension in fascia can keep your nervous system on high alert, feeding into patterns of pain, anxiety, and fatigue. When released, it helps signal safety and reassurance to your entire system, providing ease, flow and softness.
Gentle fascia-focused therapies like craniosacral therapy and mindful movement can help soften fascia while sending “safety” signals to the nervous system, reducing both pain and anxiety while creating more space, ease, and a deeper connection to your body.
How I Support Fascia Health
I bring fascia release into your life through different approaches, all working with your body’s natural healing processes:
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy – This deeply calms the nervous system so fascia can unwind naturally. It’s incredibly gentle yet profound.
Fascia Release Classes – Gentle movements and breathwork designed to restore balance, flexibility, and ease.
EFT Tapping – This reduces the emotional load that can keep fascia tense. Your tissues hold more than just physical tension – they hold your stories, your stress, your history.
Bach Flower Remedies – Supporting the emotional and energetic side of healing, helping address the deeper patterns that show up as physical tension.

It’s a beautiful way to support your fascia’s natural ability to soften and release.
Often the most effective approach involves blending these tools to meet your specific needs. Your fascia story is unique, so your healing approach should be too.
The Deeper Invitation
If you’ve been feeling tense, tired, or like you’re wearing your body rather than feeling like you are living in it, fascia work might be exactly what you need. It’s not about fixing something broken – it’s about reconnecting with your body’s innate wisdom and capacity for ease.
This work can feel unexpectedly emotional sometimes. That’s completely normal. When fascia releases, it’s not uncommon for old emotions or memories to surface. This isn’t something to fear – it’s your system finally feeling safe enough to let go of what it’s been holding.
The goal isn’t perfect flexibility or the absence of all tension. It’s about developing a more fluid, responsive relationship with your own body. About feeling more like yourself in your own skin.
You might just leave feeling lighter, taller, and more yourself than you have in a while.
Because healing begins with the choices you make today, and sometimes that choice is as simple as treating your body with the gentleness it’s been asking for all along.
Let’s serve your cells.
Book a session or join a class. Your fascia – and your nervous system – will thank you.
