The truth about cacao

Last year I felt depleted. My energy had nosedived, my immune system had crashed and my already unpredictable perimenopausal cycle became even more erratic. I wasn’t ill, exactly, but I wasn’t well or thriving either. I felt depleted in a way that no supplement or early night seemed to touch.

I knew I needed to nourish myself differently. Not restrict. Not overhaul. Just feed the parts of me that had been running on empty. That’s when I turned to cacao.

I wasn’t looking to give anything up. I love my tea breaks. I enjoy the ritual and companionship of meeting for a coffee. However when I decided to start drinking a cup of pure cacao in the mornings, blended with collagen, inositol, cinnamon, and ginger things started to shift.

Instead of that familiar rollercoaster of energy peaks and slumps, I felt steady. Focused. My mood felt brighter, and I was sleeping more deeply. Even my performance during my regular weights class improved (although, full disclosure, I still tend to backchat and complain during circuits — some things will never change).

Cacao gave my body exactly what it had been asking for. And it reminded me of something I know, but sometimes forget:

The way we feel about food matters just as much as what’s on the plate.

Why Safety (and Pleasure) Matter

When we feel safe with food, we digest better. We absorb more nutrients. We stop using meals as a moral battleground. That’s not just poetic — that’s physiology. Your nervous system and digestive system are in constant conversation. Stress, shame, and guilt impair digestion. Pleasure, presence, and gratitude enhance it. You literally absorb more from your food when you enjoy it.

Yet so many of us eat from a place of tension. We restrict, label, judge, or rush. We “earn” our meals. We eat with one eye on the clock and the other on our inner critic. And then we wonder why we’re still exhausted.

Food isn’t just fuel. It’s chemistry and connection. When we honour that and we choose food that supports us and let ourselves enjoy it we create the conditions for deep nourishment

What Makes Cacao So Special?

This isn’t about raw food fads or Instagram-worthy lattes. I’m talking about real, unprocessed cacao — not cocoa powder, and definitely not the sugar-heavy bar chocolate-like products lining the supermarket shelves.

I use a cacao paste (also called cacao liquor), made from the whole bean ground down, which retains all of its natural fats, proteins, and micronutrients. This means its nutritional profile remains intact — dense, bioavailable, and synergistic in a way no lab-made supplement can replicate.

Here’s what makes it so powerful:

  • Magnesium: Supports nervous system regulation, muscle function, sleep, and stress resilience.
  • Iron: Crucial for oxygen transport and energy — a game changer if you live with fatigue, pain, or autoimmune conditions.
  • Flavonoids: These antioxidants reduce inflammation, support heart health, and enhance brain function.
  • Theobromine: A gentle stimulant that boosts circulation and energy without the crash of caffeine.
  • Neurotransmitter support: Cacao contains compounds that support mood and mental clarity, including serotonin, tryptophan, phenylethylamine (aka the “love” molecule), and anandamide (meaning “bliss”).
  • Gut health: Its polyphenols feed beneficial gut bacteria, supporting immune and inflammatory balance — critical in chronic pain, stress, and mood issues.
  • Skin health: Flavanols also support collagen production and may reduce signs of ageing — a nice bonus.

For me, it’s become a true ally: physically, emotionally, hormonally.

Real Nourishment Is Never Restrictive

We’ve been conditioned to think that comfort is something to be earned. That sweetness means weakness. That enjoying food means we’re doing it “wrong.”

But what if comfort wasn’t a failure, but a form of wisdom?

What if we stopped moralising our meals and started trusting our bodies again?

When we eat from a place of safety — when we let ourselves enjoy food — we actually need less. Our nervous systems settle. Our hunger cues regulate. We feel satisfied, not deprived.

This isn’t indulgence. It’s nourishment.

And cacao embodies that beautifully. It supports your cells, your mood, your gut, and your hormones — while also being delicious and comforting. That’s the kind of nutrition I’m interested in. Real food. Real pleasure. Real health.
