Perimenopause is often seen as a storm of hormones, hot flushes, and fluctuating moods. But something more subtle is happening deep in the tissues and it can help to explain why you feel stiff, sore, and oddly disconnected from your body at times.
That “something” is fascia. This connective tissue weaves through your whole body, wrapping around muscles, organs, bones, and nerves. It holds us together and helps us move with flow and ease, or not.
As our oestrogen levels decline during perimenopause, fascia loses some of its collagen support and hydration. It becomes less elastic and fluid, that can result in us feeling tight in the hips, stiff ribs, sore shoulders, or just a vague sense of feeling compressed. The kind of ache that stretching doesn’t seem to shift.
Fascia and hormonal changes are deeply linked, from puberty to fertility and into this transitional phase of perimenopause. The shifts in oestrogen and progesterone affect not only our moods, energy, and cycles, but also the suppleness of our tissues, the quality of our breath, and how safe we feel in our skin.
And then there’s the body composition piece, that bloating feeling, the lovely belly fat we develop and fluid retention that creeps in. This isn’t just about weight. These changes can physically affect fascia, creating even more internal tension, particularly around the pelvis, ribs, and digestive system. It’s one reason prolapse, incontinence, and sluggish digestion become more common in this phase.
So what do we do?
Not push, pull, or force.
Instead, we listen and gently respond.
Gentle fascia release, breathwork, and nervous system care can create profound shifts, not just mechanically, but emotionally. When fascia softens, the whole system can start to regulate. And when your nervous system feels safe, fascia becomes more receptive. It’s a two-way flow.
That’s why I work with:
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy — to gently unwind fascial tension and support your nervous system to shift from ‘fight or flight’ into a restorative state
EFT Tapping — to process the emotional weight your body still carries
Naturopathic tools — like herbs, nutrition and Bach Flowers to nourish your hormones, fascia and sense of ease
Fascia release classes (Power Pause) — guided somatic movement, breath and awareness to help you reconnect with your body. find Upcoming classes are announced here (Click here for Instagram)
My handcrafted Magnesium Oil and Wild Yam Balm — formulated especially for women navigating perimenopause
The magnesium blend soothes tight muscles and helps calm the buzziness that can interfere with sleep, while the Wild Yam Balm nourishes deeply — combining herbs like tulsi, skullcap, clary sage, and lavender to ease tension and support hormonal balance.
Together, these tools can form a daily ritual of care — softening the inside and restoring a sense of flow.
Perimenopause doesn’t have to feel like a fight. You can feel more at home in your body again. Whether you’re using HRT or not, these approaches work beautifully alongside other modalities.
