Getting to Know Ourselves- Breast Health

In our culture, breasts have often been viewed through various lenses—overly sexualised, too big/too small, symbolic of womanhood(or lack of), or even a source of shame. This limited perspective can disconnect us from our breasts as integral parts of our body, reducing them to symbols rather than a natural extension of our whole body health. Women who have undergone mastectomies often experience a unique kind of loss, reinforcing the idea that femininity is about far more than the presence or absence of breasts.

Our breasts are marvelous, functional tissues that play an integral role in, and can impact our overall health. They deserve care and celebration as does any other part of our body. Considering breast health is about valuing personal wellness, our vitality, and building a compassionate relationship with ourselves. In this light, we can approach breast health in a new way, focusing on nourishment, connection, and mindful care that uplifts both our body and emotional health.

Building a connection and relationship with our breasts can be empowering. It is important to reframe touch as a way to cultivate self-awareness, trust and acceptance. Engaging in gentle touch or massage supports lymphatic flow and nurtures the tissue itself. Breast tissue is richly filled with nerves and sensory receptors, and when touched with intention, these receptors trigger the release of oxytocin. Known as the “love hormone,” oxytocin promotes feelings of calm and bonding, strengthening the nervous system’s ability to regulate and ground us. This is a compassionate touch rather than a sexual one. One that helps us to build trust and safety within our core. Simply holding underneath the breast can actually bring a great source of comfort and ease. If this all feels too much, then take it gently, step by step. Simplys using a more gentle mindful touch when washing in the shower can be a good start.

The structure of breast tissue lacks its own muscles and has limited direct lymphatic drainage pathways, making it susceptible to stagnation. Massaging the breasts with nutrient-rich oils or balms helps to remove toxins, reduce congestion whilst also nourishing the tissue for repair and regeneration. It can also be a worthwhile method to get to know your breast tissue and skin condition to notice any changes over time. My handcrafted Wild yam balm (see below), for instance, contains compounds that can be absorbed through the skin to support tissue health, while ingredients like frankincense, tulsi, and skullcap offer nourishing, collagen-boosting benefits. These elements encourage cellular renewal, promote elasticity, and offer support for skin health. You could also use coconut oil for a therapeutic and nourishing effect.

Good nutrition is essential for hormonal balance and basic cellular function and repair. Essential fatty acids, like those found in avocados, fatty fish, butter, meat cooked on the bone, and nut butters, play an important role in hormone production. Fats are essential for supporting the body’s natural cycles and maintaining breast tissue integrity. Proteins provide the building blocks for tissue repair, essential for maintaining elasticity and function. Beyond fats and proteins, focusing on gut health is crucial as the microbiome influences both hormone regulation and immune response. Anti-inflammatory foods such as leafy greens, berries, and sea buckthorn oils enhance lymphatic flow and reduce cellular stress, keeping tissue vibrant and resilient.

Nourishing breast health goes beyond the physical. Many women carry deep-seated feelings about their bodies, particularly related to breast health. Emotional tools such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) can help release past beliefs or traumas. Maybe you have experienced feelings of loss through mastectomy, or distrust through breast cancer. These relationships can be healed and nurtured. This is equally true for those who have chosen implant or explant surgery. Your body is unique and deserves to be accepted for itself, in the present moment. The road may be a bumpy one but at the end there is a real sense of calm and renewed purpose. Similarly, Bach Flower Remedies can promote emotional healing, restoring a sense of balance and comfort within your body. Bach Flower Remedies have been incorporated into my wild yam balm for added emotional support, encouraging self-compassion and connection.

Beyond targeted breast care, practices like craniosacral therapy offer deep systemic benefits for the nervous, immune, and hormonal systems. This gentle, non-invasive technique helps regulate the body, relieving tension, building safety and acceptance and promotes the innate healing process. For those who’ve felt disconnected from their body, craniosacral therapy can offer a way to reconnect, integrating body and mind, fostering ease, flow, comfort and supporting your journey toward whole-body wellness.

We can celebrate this sensitive and vital tissue, integrate it as part of a resilient, thriving self. By combining nutritional, emotional, and physical support, we can nurture our bodies and embrace our breasts just as they are.
